Generative Artificial Intelligence (GAI) has the potential to revolutionize higher education, offering personalization, efficiency, and adaptability. Furthermore, in recent years, generative AI has radically changed the higher education landscape with near-universal adoption among students, bringing greater efficiency to learning and administration in each of its activities. However, significant challenges are also emerging, such as: Academic integrity: AI-assisted plagiarism is common, and educational institutions must restructure the way they conduct assessments. Cognitive skills: Its continued use can be detrimental to higher-level skills. Training and policies: It is essential to train teachers, develop institutional frameworks, and ensure equity, privacy, and ethics. Development of critical skills: Excessive use of AI can weaken cognitive skills and critical thinking.
Generative AI provides many benefits in personalization, efficiency, and learning, but it also brings with it significant risks that threaten academic integrity, educational quality, equity, and privacy. Institutions must adopt a dynamic, ethical, and pedagogically sound approach to harness its potential without compromising their values.
If a balanced and responsible approach is adopted by both students and faculty, generative AI can benefit higher education, provided it is accompanied by appropriate regulation and pedagogical preparation. In conclusion, the use of generative AI can help us enhance the skills of each person who uses it, provided it is done with full regulation and responsibility.
